The Vampire’s Assistant book review
September 25th, 2009 by tmoore7
My book is called The Vampire’s Assistant. It was written by Darren Shan. It is one of a series of books. It takes place in several settings; however, the main setting is California. While most people think of Dracula and late-night horror movies when considering the subject of vampires, The Vampire’s Assistant moves well beyond those basics and introduces the reader to modern-day vampires. The eternal popularity of vampires, and new ways of interpreting them, is what this new book is all about. It did surprise me with its amount of fresh and intriguing perspectives on the vampire. These fictional events are exciting, unique, and entertaining. I also feel the content is suitable for children. The main characters are Darren Shan, Mr. Crepsley, Mr.Tall, Evra, Mr.Tiny and Sam.Darren Shan is a half vampire with pale skin. He is in his early teens. He wears an old dusty tuxedo. He loves spiders. Mr.Crepsley is a full vampire. He has very white skin and a small crop of orange hair on his head. He has a long scar running down his left cheek. He is very creepy, and he is the owner of Madam Octa which is a spider. Mr.Tall is the owner of the Cirque Du Freak. He is very tall and looks like there are two empty eye sockets were his eyes are supposed to be. Evra is the snake boy and has scales where his skin is supposed to be. He has a pet snake, and he is Darren’s best friend. Mr. Tiny is very mysterious. He strikes fear into everyone he meets, and he controls the little people.Sam is very intelligent for being ten. He knows more than Darren and Evra. He wants to join the Cirque Du Freak more than anything. Many of the human struggles which occur today are depicted in this book. Darren, who is a half vampire, has no friends, and he struggles to fit in as a human and as a vampire. He joins a circus freak show as an attempt to fit in as a vampire. He makes some friends; however, he continues to struggle as he does not wish to drink human blood. If he does not, he will die. He also must display responsibility by caring for Madame Octa because Mr. Crepsley has made him care for her. Later, he must face the death of a friend. Inner struggles, responsibility, betrayal, and great loss are just some of the ingredients in the recipe for this great book. Vampires in a creepy circus, spiders, and eerie characters add to the excitement. I recommend this book for for both adults and kids, as there is a little something for people of all ages.
